These provided him with a rich source of classical motifs that he employed in his designs for hundreds of engravings and etchings, which were executed by Philips Galle and other printmakers and disseminated throughout Europe. This drawing’s fine pen-and-ink hatching is suited to its purpose—a detailed study for the adjoining engraving by Galle, which reverses the composition.
