The right panels show a town filled with open-fronted stores displaying an array of wares and pedestrians strolling along broad thoroughfares. On the left half of the screen is the shrine, an elaborate complex with a dock and temple halls in front, a pagoda, and more private quarters in back. The buildings extend over the water, and pilgrims were only permitted to approach by boat (as seen in the middle of the screen), passing the shrine’s most famous site, a large red torii gate that appears to float on the water. The gate, a Shinto symbol for the transition between secular and sacred realms, is visible in the third panel from the right. Clouds formed of gold leaf swirl along the top and bottom of the screen, framing the scene. Breaks in the clouds reveal hints of a distant landscape beyond. Most likely, this screen originally was paired with one showing the Sumiyoshi Shrine, a Shinto complex in Osaka.

The scene shows boats in a lake in from of a market village with open shops showing vendors and their wares at far right.  On the left half of the screen, boats are shown arriving at Itsukushima Shrine (Itsukushima-jinja厳島神社), with a dock and shrine halls in front, a pagoda, and more private quarters in back.  Clouds in gold leaf flow along the top and bottom of the screen, helping to frame the scene along with the simply depict landscape elements, including green trees and hills.  Most likely, this screen would originally have been paired with a screen showing Sumiyoshi Shrine, another Shinto complex.

In the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture in Japan, the Itsukushima Shrine is a Shinto complex built on the sacred island of Itsukushima.  The famous \"floating\" tori gate to the shrine stands in the lake in the third panel from the right.

The Shrine may have been established as early as the 6th century, but was rebuilt many times in its history and is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
