He was active in the 1920s and 1930s, during which period he drew Landscape, and he was invited to participate eight times in the annual National Art Exhibition of Korea. In 1935 he was accused by the occupying forces of the Japanese imperial government of painting a seditious image and was taken to Japan, where he was imprisoned and tortured. He only started painting, drawing, and exhibiting again in 1978, one year before his death. In this painting, Baik presents a scene filled with brushwork reminiscent of Chinese literati painting. Yet his emphasis on Mi dots, or splashed ink in the style of the Chinese artist Mi Fu—meant to impart a light texture on the image—gives the work a sense of experimental individuality.\n","remarks":"ASIA3_13_WLA Day 1 Cataloguing"}],"media":[{"id":192570,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/STU01364","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted","caption":"PUAM photo"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2015,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 75/76 (2016-17): 102-125.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2015,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 75/76 (2016-17): 102-125., p. 112","date":2016,"id":9661,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/i40228781"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Asia, Korea","code":"Place made","continent":"Asia","subcontinent":null,"country":"Korea","region":null,"state":null,"city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/1835841/republic-of-korea.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2171671,"term":"pine trees","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2120146,"term":"mountains","aatid":300008795,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2171706,"term":"clouds","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2034152,"term":"Korean","aatid":300018668,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2052977,"term":"paintings","aatid":300033618,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2055694,"term":"landscapes (representations)","aatid":300015636,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2043813,"term":"paper (fiber product)","aatid":300014109,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2167672,"term":"ink","aatid":300015012,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2052977,"classification":"paintings"}],"cultures":[{"id":13873,"culture":"Korean","alphasort":"Korean","begindate":0,"enddate":0,"displayculture":"Korean","displaydate":null}],"cultureterms":[{"id":2034152,"culture":"Korean"}],"periods":[{"id":13587,"period":"Modern period","alphasort":"Modern","begindate":1912,"enddate":2100,"displayperiod":"Modern period, 1912–present","displaydate":"1912–present"}],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199319,"term":"Asian Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"91.30"},{"element":"frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"91.20"},{"element":"frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"6.34"},{"element":"Painting","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"68.00"},{"element":"Painting","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"68.00"}],"packages":[{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":214208,"name":"Gallery_13-15(Pavilion4)-Asian"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/STU01364"],"displaymaker":"Baik Yoon Moon 白潤文, 1906–1979; born Seoul, South Korea; active Washington, DC, and New York, NY","displayculture":"Korean","displayperiod":"Modern period, 1912–present","caption":"Korean, Modern period (1912–present), Baik Yoon Moon 白潤文 (1906–1979; born Seoul, South Korea; active Washington, DC, and New York, NY), Landscape, early 20th century.
