Several of the fifteen woodcuts in Dürer’s Apocalypse series highlight the Book of Revelation’s theme of Christianity’s victorious battle against the dragon, symbolizing Satan. In this dramatic scene, the archangel Michael, defender of the Church, thrusts a large spear into the scaly dragon’s throat, while surrounding angels with various weapons ward off demonic creatures. Dürer staged the ferocious celestial battle high above a tranquil panoramic landscape, thus demarcating the division between heavenly and earthly realms.
