Published by Anton Koberger (1440/45–1513) in German rather than Latin and incorporating woodcuts originally made for a Bible published in Cologne in 1478, the deluxe edition of Koberger’s Bible features hand-colored illustrations in a style reminiscent of medieval manuscript illumination, with generalized, broadly delineated fi gures acting out the narrative in a compressed pictographic space.
