The group’s name refers to the aperture setting for a camera lens that captures the greatest depth of field, rendering a photograph in which the foreground, middle ground, and background are all in focus. In a manifesto displayed at the Group’s first exhibition, in 1932, f/64 called for images that celebrate the distinct characteristics of photography: “The Group will show no work at any time that does not conform to its standards of pure photography.
