Trained in Western oil painting in Japan, he became an influential teacher after returning home. Adapting traditional Chinese brush painting, Zhu’s work in the 1950s reflected his acceptance of the role of art in the service of the state. The year 1973, the date of this painting, was in the midst of the Cultural Revolution (1966–76). Whether Zhu was disillusioned with the course of the nation or was becoming increasingly concerned with personal artistic expression, this painting of narcissus flowers signals a return to traditional literati painting through its bold personal style that combines Chinese brush methods with Western color sensibilities. </P></SPAN>","remarks":"Asian rotation May 2018"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"&nbsp;–2017&nbsp;James D.
