Used as drafting tools from the eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, ruling pens are notoriously difficult to control. Here the artist dipped the pen in acrylic pigments of different tones and colors, forming layers and layers of overlapping circles that he built up in an almost meditative process. The intricate lattice is established by the initial positioning of the center point of the circles that are calculated and plotted in advance, as diagrammed at bottom left.","remarks":"Asian Art rotation September 2019"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"1975– Moriyuki Kuwabara, born 1942.
–2018 Gallery a-cube (Tokyo, Japan), sold to the Princeton University Art Museum, 2018.
","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":235206,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMSTU2022_0644","isprimary":1,"rank":0,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted","caption":"PUAM Photo"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"
"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2018," Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 77/78 (2017-18)
","citation":"
"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2018," Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 77/78 (2017-18)
, p. 168","date":2017,"id":9760,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/45401204"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Asia, Japan","code":"Place made","continent":"Asia","subcontinent":null,"country":"Japan","region":null,"state":null,"city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/1861060/japan.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2033927,"term":"Showa","aatid":300018568,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2052977,"term":"paintings","aatid":300033618,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2033838,"term":"Japanese","aatid":300018519,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2159868,"term":"geometric patterns","aatid":300165213,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2095701,"term":"abstraction","aatid":300056508,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053119,"term":"acrylic paintings","aatid":300181918,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2165436,"term":"acrylic","aatid":300014426,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2153366,"term":"painting (image-making)","aatid":300054216,"termtype":"Techniques"},{"id":2043813,"term":"paper (fiber product)","aatid":300014109,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2052977,"classification":"paintings"},{"id":2053119,"classification":"acrylic paintings"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2033838,"culture":"Japanese"}],"periods":[{"id":12593,"period":"Shōwa era","alphasort":"Showa era","begindate":1926,"enddate":1989,"displayperiod":"Shōwa era, 1926–1989","displaydate":"1926–1989"}],"periodterms":[{"id":2033927,"period":"Showa"}],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199319,"term":"Asian Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"63.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"51.00"},{"element":"frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"77.50"},{"element":"frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"64.80"},{"element":"frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"2.50"}],"packages":[],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMSTU2022_0644"],"displaymaker":"Moriyuki Kuwabara 桑原盛行, born 1942, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":"Shōwa era, 1926–1989","caption":"Moriyuki Kuwabara 桑原盛行 (born 1942, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan), Shōwa era (1926–1989), Drawing, 1975.
