Known primarily for his biblical and mythological equestrian compositions, here Burroughs seems to compose his work based on the sketch pinned to the wall behind him. The bright pink hues of the studio walls strike a contrast with the line drawing, the muted colors of the canvas on the easel, and even the artist, whose rigid stance and stark bleached shirt with gentle folds and shadows bestow a sculptural quality. As a curator, Burroughs acquired several works of art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art that were considered avant-garde, including the first painting by Paul Cézanne to enter a public museum. However, his artistic practice was rooted in the Romantic naturalism propagated by his mentor, the French artist Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, and admired by Caro-Delvaille, who painted Burroughs on an extended trip to the United States, where he also painted other art-world luminaries.","remarks":"Lowrie House Install "},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Stuart P.
