Gellert was an advocate for Black liberation, and his image is born of personal experience: He was an active labor organizer and anti-war activist and was arrested at an anti-fascist protest he co-organized in 1928. As a result of his art and activism, Gellert’s loyalties were questioned, and he was monitored by the FBI from the 1920s to the 1970s.
