The other side shows a later moment in Ayala’s life, when he worked as a trash collector in Philadelphia. Around the vessel’s neck and volutes are smaller alternating panels that depict Philadelphia and Puerto Rico. The remainder of the vase is filled with ornamental decoration that both relates to Lugo’s early life, including fire hydrants that would spray water for children on hot summer days and hair picks, and draws from ancient Greek ceramics, the inspiration for the form of the vase, with the inclusion of palmettes, meanders, and geometric shapes. This vessel ties together multiple styles, forms, and narratives that are foundational to the history of ceramic production.","remarks":"MED-STR_22_CLA.pdf – Day One Cataloguing"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"2023\t R\t&\tCompany,\tNew\tYork,\tNY\n","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":251947,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11836","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted Download - Under Copyright","caption":"PUAM Photo"},{"id":251948,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11837","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted Download - Under Copyright","caption":"PUAM Photo"},{"id":251949,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11839","isprimary":0,"rank":3,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted Download - Under Copyright","caption":"PUAM Photo"},{"id":251950,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11840","isprimary":0,"rank":4,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted Download - Under Copyright","caption":"PUAM Photo"},{"id":251951,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11842","isprimary":0,"rank":5,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted Download - Under Copyright","caption":"PUAM Photo"},{"id":251952,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11843","isprimary":0,"rank":6,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted Download - Under Copyright","caption":"PUAM Photo"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: North America, United States, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia","code":"Place made","continent":"North America","subcontinent":null,"country":"United States","region":null,"state":"Pennsylvania","city":"Philadelphia","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":null,"location":{"lat":"","lon":""}},{"displaygeography":"Place depicted: North America, United States, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Kensington","code":"Place depicted","continent":"North America","subcontinent":null,"country":"United States","region":null,"state":"Pennsylvania","city":"Philadelphia","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":"Kensington","locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":null,"location":{"lat":"","lon":""}},{"displaygeography":"Place depicted: North America, United States, Puerto Rico","code":"Place depicted","continent":"North America","subcontinent":null,"country":"United States","region":null,"state":"Puerto Rico","city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":null,"location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2049167,"term":"ceramics","aatid":300151343,"termtype":"Classification"}],"classifications":[{"id":2049167,"classification":"ceramics"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199325,"term":"North American Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"127.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"64.76"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"60.95"}],"packages":[{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":279982,"name":"Line_Color_Shape"},{"packageid":220207,"name":"Gallery_22(Pavilion6)-AncientMed"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX23_11836"],"displaymaker":"Roberto Lugo, born 1981, Philadelphia, PA; active Philadelphia","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Roberto Lugo (born 1981, Philadelphia, PA; active Philadelphia), The Man who Carried the Ice Box on his Back up the Mountain: Alberto Ayala, from the series Orange and Black, 2023.
