A bicycle wheel, a ruler, a jar, plants, and cut-up sheets of film are represented through a process known as cliché-verre, a photographic method first used in the mid-nineteenth century. For this work, designed for a 1980 group exhibition of cliché-verres at the Detroit Institute of Arts, the artist layered objects onto the surface of photosensitive film; their differing levels of translucency created variations in tone when the film was exposed to light. He then used the resulting print—a clichéverre— as a negative to create a lithographic stone printing matrix, which he printed on clear plastic to simulate the transparency of the original base.","remarks":"PBL Rotation June 2019"}],"media":[{"id":6215,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/x1981-9","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted","caption":"Luna Digitization Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 1981\", Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 41, no. 1 (1982): p. 16-31.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 1981\", Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 41, no. 1 (1982): p. 16-31., p. 23","date":1982,"id":3368,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774576"},{"boilertext":"Johanna Burton et al., Pop art: contemporary perspectives, (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Art Museum; New Haven, CT: distributed by Yale University Press, 2007)","citation":"Johanna Burton et al., Pop art: contemporary perspectives, (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Art Museum; New Haven, CT: distributed by Yale University Press, 2007), p. 146, illustrated","date":2007,"id":267,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/78988872"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: North America, United States, Michigan, Detroit","code":"Place made","continent":"North America","subcontinent":null,"country":"United States","region":null,"state":"Michigan","city":"Detroit","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/4990729/detroit.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2116349,"term":"wheels","aatid":300024976,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2118677,"term":"words","aatid":300250895,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2135053,"term":"exhibitions","aatid":300054766,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2054256,"term":"prints","aatid":300041273,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2126844,"term":"posters","aatid":300027221,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2054638,"term":"offset lithographs","aatid":300192896,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2038492,"term":"American","aatid":300107956,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2165804,"term":"Mylar (TM)","aatid":300014480,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2167709,"term":"lithographic ink","aatid":300187750,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2155034,"term":"offset lithography","aatid":300192900,"termtype":"Techniques"},{"id":2156299,"term":"mounting","aatid":300081370,"termtype":"Techniques"}],"classifications":[{"id":2054638,"classification":"offset lithographs"},{"id":2054256,"classification":"prints"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2038492,"culture":"American"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199325,"term":"North American Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"sheet","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"63.50"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"47.50"},{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"58.20"},{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"45.70"}],"packages":[{"packageid":196700,"name":"MoCo-Pop art"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/x1981-9"],"displaymaker":"Robert Rauschenberg, 1925–2008; born Port Arthur, TX; died Captiva Island, FL; active New York, NY, and Captiva Island | Printed by Bridget Smith | Drawing and Print Club Founders Society, Detroit Institute of Arts","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Robert Rauschenberg (1925–2008; born Port Arthur, TX; died Captiva Island, FL; active New York, NY, and Captiva Island), Printed by Bridget Smith, Drawing and Print Club Founders Society, Detroit Institute of Arts, Cliché-Verre: Hand Drawn, Light Printed, 1983.
