The glaze is an amalgam of platinum, gold, silver, and frit—fused glass—that forms tiny, molten droplets during firing. On <i>Wave</i>, the silver mist overlays a white and black design evoking a tumultuous seascape, formed from cobalt mixed with iron. This design pattern is a specific reference to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and the devastating human and environmental cost of the Fukushima nuclear incident that it caused.
