The hydria, or water vessel, was made on Crete and has been decorated with cuttlefish and papyrus plants, which grow in the water. The Minoans were involved in extensive trade across the Mediterranean at this time, and their visual forms, including the predilection for water imagery, quickly spread to other cultures, including to the Mycenaeans, a group of people who lived on mainland Greece. The inclusion of the cuttlefish on the Mycenaean goblet hints at the introduction of maritime Minoan imagery to Mycenaean visual forms. The small aryballos, or jar, was made many centuries later in Corinth, but the use of the octopus on it points to the lasting legacy of Minoan visual culture in Greece.\n
","remarks":"MED_22_T2-1_CLA-Day 1 Cataloguing (group chat for 2002-301, y1929-1, y1929-189) "},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Given by Miss Jessie Frothingham in 1929","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":6280,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1929-189_1","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"Princeton University Art Museum: Handbook of the Collections (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Art Museum, 2013)","citation":"Princeton University Art Museum: Handbook of the Collections (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Art Museum, 2013), p. 73","date":2013,"id":1994,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/865020505"},{"boilertext":"J.
