The four sons of Horus, the falcon-headed son of Isis and Osiris (god of the Underworld), were tasked with protecting the organs. In the New Kingdom, each of the sons was identified on canopic jars through a specific representation: Hapy, responsible for the lungs, was shown with a baboon head; Imsety, the liver, as a human head; Duamutef, the stomach, as a jackal; and Qebehsenuef, the intestines, as a falcon. Given the depiction of a human head on both of these jars, it is likely that they were originally meant to house the liver of the deceased.\n","remarks":"MED1_22_WLA.pdf – Day One Cataloguing (group chat for y1942-49 a-b, y1942-50 a-b)"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Given to the Museum by Carl Otto von Kienbusch by at least 1942","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":161840,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV77911","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":161841,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV77912","isprimary":0,"rank":20,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"
The Carl Otto von Kienbusch, Jr. Memorial Collection (Princeton: Princeton University Art Museum, 1956)
","citation":"
The Carl Otto von Kienbusch, Jr. Memorial Collection (Princeton: Princeton University Art Museum, 1956)
, no. 15","date":1956,"id":1824,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/3809022"},{"boilertext":"\"Recent accessions\", Record of the Museum of Historic Art, Princeton University 1, no. 2 (1942): p. 11.","citation":"\"Recent accessions\", Record of the Museum of Historic Art, Princeton University 1, no. 2 (1942): p. 11., p. 11","date":1942,"id":5301,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774140"}],"exhibitions":[{"exhibitionid":1579,"citation":"The Carl Otto von Kienbusch, Jr. Memorial Collection (Princeton University Art Museum, June 1956)","isvirtual":true,"begindate":"1956-06","enddate":"1956-06","uri":"https://artmuseum.princeton.edu/art/exhibitions/1579"}],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Africa, Egypt","code":"Place made","continent":"Africa","subcontinent":null,"country":"Egypt","region":null,"state":null,"city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":null,"location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2036860,"term":"Egyptian (ancient)","aatid":300020251,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2036996,"term":"New Kingdom","aatid":300020353,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2049167,"term":"ceramics","aatid":300151343,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2158090,"term":"faces","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2073226,"term":"jars","aatid":300195347,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2073745,"term":"canopic jars","aatid":300198901,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2160353,"term":"clay","aatid":300010439,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2160397,"term":"slip","aatid":300010459,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2073226,"classification":"jars"},{"id":2073745,"classification":"canopic jars"},{"id":2049167,"classification":"ceramics"}],"cultures":[{"id":15181,"culture":"Egyptian","alphasort":"Egyptian","begindate":-3000,"enddate":395,"displayculture":"Egyptian","displaydate":null}],"cultureterms":[{"id":2036860,"culture":"Egyptian (ancient)"}],"periods":[{"id":12858,"period":"New Kingdom","alphasort":"New Kingdom","begindate":-1550,"enddate":-1070,"displayperiod":"New Kingdom, ca. 1550–1070 BCE","displaydate":"ca. 1550–1070 BCE"}],"periodterms":[{"id":2036996,"period":"New Kingdom"}],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199315,"term":"African Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199316,"term":"Ancient Mediterranean Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"42.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"diam.","units":"centimeters","dimension":"19.50"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"38.30"}],"packages":[{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":220207,"name":"Gallery_22(Pavilion6)-AncientMed"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV77911"],"displaymaker":null,"displayculture":"Egyptian","displayperiod":"New Kingdom, ca. 1550–1070 BCE","caption":"Egyptian, New Kingdom (ca. 1550–1070 BCE), Egypt, Canopic Jar.
