He juxtaposed works of art and objects from nature, evoking the artificialia and naturalia (crafted and natural objects) of seventeenth-century curiosity cabinets. The art—a toppled plaster bust, a bronze statuette of Athena, a miniature portrait of a contemporary young man, an album opened to an idyllic image, a gold chain with a portrait medallion, and a print of architectural ruins—attests to the painter’s ability to capture various materials and surfaces. Many of these objects evoke an ancient past, fueling a meditation on the passage of time. The examples of speckled shells, which many Europeans collected—a large Conus geographus, two Conus marmoreus seen from different perspectives, and a Mitra mitra—point to the awesome diversity and beauty of God’s creation. Like the collector’s cabinets that inspired it, the painting encourages both contemplation and delight.\n","remarks":"CRSS_17_WLA - Day 1 Cataloguing"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Anonymous sale, Parke-Bernet, New York, March 14, 1951, lot 17, to Princeton University Art Museum.","remarks":"Migrated from 9.35 12/2013"}],"media":[{"id":235708,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/PUAMANX22_1569","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"PUAM Photo"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"Pierre Rosenberg and John Pope-Hennessy, La peinture française du XVIIe siècle dans les collections américaines (Paris: Réunion des musées nationaux, 1982)

","citation":"Pierre Rosenberg and John Pope-Hennessy, La peinture française du XVIIe siècle dans les collections américaines (Paris: Réunion des musées nationaux, 1982)

, p. 373","date":1982,"id":573,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/9194305"},{"boilertext":"\"Recent acquisitions,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 10, no. 2 (1951): p. 22-23.","citation":"\"Recent acquisitions,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 10, no. 2 (1951): p. 22-23., p. 23","date":1951,"id":862,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774224"},{"boilertext":"Hans Haug, \"Trois peintres strasbourgeois de natures mortes,\" La revue des arts Vol. 2, nr. 3 (September 1952),","citation":"Hans Haug, \"Trois peintres strasbourgeois de natures mortes,\" La revue des arts Vol. 2, nr. 3 (September 1952),, pp. 137-150 (pp. 144-145)","date":1952,"id":9855,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/1639980"},{"boilertext":"Ger Luijten, \"Cat. 62: The Shell, 1650\" in Rembrandt the Printmaker (Zwolle: Waanders; Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum)","citation":"Ger Luijten, \"Cat. 62: The Shell, 1650\" in Rembrandt the Printmaker (Zwolle: Waanders; Amsterdam: Rijksmuseum), pp. 258-262 (fig. c)","date":2000,"id":9856,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/45433312"},{"boilertext":"Important paintings by old masters: Sale no. 1232, held March 14, 1951, (New York: Parke-Bernet Galleries, 1951).","citation":"Important paintings by old masters: Sale no. 1232, held March 14, 1951, (New York: Parke-Bernet Galleries, 1951).","date":1951,"id":4396,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/4685358"},{"boilertext":"Hans Haug, “Sébastien Stoskopff,” L'Oeil 76 (1961)","citation":"Hans Haug, “Sébastien Stoskopff,” L'Oeil 76 (1961), pp. 23-35","date":1961,"id":4398,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/272534477"},{"boilertext":"Joseph Jeffers Dodge, The Age of Louis XIII, (Jacksonville, FL: Cummer Gallery of Art, 1969)","citation":"Joseph Jeffers Dodge, The Age of Louis XIII, (Jacksonville, FL: Cummer Gallery of Art, 1969), ","date":1969,"id":4400,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/203385"},{"boilertext":"Michel Faré, Le grand siècle de la nature morte en France: le XVIIe siècle (Fribourg: Office du livre; Paris: Société française du livre, 1974)","citation":"Michel Faré, Le grand siècle de la nature morte en France: le XVIIe siècle (Fribourg: Office du livre; Paris: Société française du livre, 1974), p. 121 (illus.)","date":1974,"id":4402,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/2034948"},{"boilertext":"Wolfgang J.
