The texts come from the Roman Catholic Mass. On the left wing is “Gloria in Excelsis,” a hymn beginning with the words sung by the angels at Jesus’s birth. On the right wing is the Nicene Creed, a profession of faith drafted at the ecumenical Council of Nicaea in a.d. 325. On the central panel are the words pronounced by the priest upon the elevation of the host, the moment in the Mass when it becomes the sacrificial body of Christ. The ritual reenacts the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper—illustrated in the adjacent image—and refers to his sacrifice on the cross, depicted in the Crucifixion scene above.","remarks":"K1-3 May 2012"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Baron Kuffner de Dioszegh, Hungary (before the 1930s; by descent to his son Raoul Kuffner); Alan Wolfe, New York (until 1953; sale, Parke Bernet, New York, April 15, 1953, lot 29, to Princeton University Art Museum).
