Seeking to expand the language of abstraction and its treatment of illusionistic depth in painting, Stella looked to architecture as a source of formal inspiration; this painting is part of a series of work that the artist named after wooden synagogues built from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century in Poland. Stella donated this work to the Princeton University Art Museum in honor of his mentor and friend William C.
