The year 1972 marked a shift in Davis’s oeuvre as he moved from single-color stained backgrounds to the use of unprimed canvas, from free floating stripes to edge-banded stripes. Although Davis is called a color field painter, his primary interest was in spatial intervals. The number of stripes ranged from eighteen in one work to eight hundred in another. As seen in Red Baron, Davis began with a matrix of vertical pencil lines, creating spaces to be filled, or not, at his discretion. For Davis, color served to complete and unify the composition.","remarks":"MM rotation August 2013"}],"media":[{"id":125034,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV48038","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted","caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2004,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 64 (2005): p. 91-135.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2004,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 64 (2005): p. 91-135., p. 94","date":2005,"id":468,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774838"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[],"terms":[{"id":2056370,"term":"red","aatid":300126225,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2056963,"term":"orange","aatid":300126734,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2061154,"term":"white (color)","aatid":300129784,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2052977,"term":"paintings","aatid":300033618,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2095701,"term":"abstraction","aatid":300056508,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2038492,"term":"American","aatid":300107956,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2053119,"term":"acrylic paintings","aatid":300181918,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2159963,"term":"stripes","aatid":300010230,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2167800,"term":"acrylic paint","aatid":300015058,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2171344,"term":"canvas","aatid":null,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2052977,"classification":"paintings"},{"id":2053119,"classification":"acrylic paintings"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2038492,"culture":"American"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199325,"term":"North American Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"174.00"},{"element":"frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"236.00"},{"element":"frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"4.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"170.50"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"233.50"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"3.50"}],"packages":[{"packageid":204016,"name":"x-COMPLETE-image_descriptions_American_Art_paintings"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV48038"],"displaymaker":"Gene Davis, American, 1920–1985","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Gene Davis (American, 1920–1985), Red Baron, 1972.
