A critic writing in the London Illustrated News described its attraction for viewers of the Aesthetic Period, an age when eclectic artistic influences were combined for maximum delectation: \"This is decorative painting of the rarest and most artistic. The pure classical feeling, the faultless draughtsmanship, modeling [and] above all the original and lovely coloring, are deserving of the warmest praise.\" In A Flower Walk the impact of Japanese prints (then newly known in Europe) and the study of classical antiquity are combined with the painter’s refined and subtle sense of color.
