An eagle sent by Zeus to tear at Prometheus’s liver flies toward\n\t\n\tan altar to his right, as punishment for stealing fire from the Olympian gods for humankind. His wound is gruesomely indicated through the addition of\n\n\tyellow and red pigment. Prometheus gestures toward his savior, Herakles, who approaches from the left holding his characteristic club and lionskin. In the center of the scene, the half-goat god Pan holds out a drinking cup to Herakles. While the subject matter on this vase is foundational within Greek myth, it is rarely depicted in the visual material that survives from mainland Greece. Its use here, on a vase made by and for an Apulian population, hints at the creative repurposing of shape, decoration, and function that occurred within the southern Italian ceramic production.\n

","remarks":"MED_22_T2-1_CLA-Day 1 Cataloguing "},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Unknown provenance; purchased by the Museum in 1989 from Robert Hecht, Jr., and Atlantis Antiquities","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":14266,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1989-30_4_GS","isprimary":0,"rank":11,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"},{"id":14267,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1989-30_3_GS","isprimary":0,"rank":10,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"},{"id":14268,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1989-30_2_GS","isprimary":0,"rank":13,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"},{"id":14269,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1989-30_1_GS","isprimary":0,"rank":12,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"},{"id":35014,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV003341","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":35015,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV003342","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"John Boardman, et. al., Lexicon iconographicum mythologiae classicae (LIMC), (Zürich: Artemis Verlag, 1981-2009).","citation":"John Boardman, et. al., Lexicon iconographicum mythologiae classicae (LIMC), (Zürich: Artemis Verlag, 1981-2009)., Vol. 7: p. 542; pl. 427, Prometheus 72 bis","date":1981,"id":3931,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/781331561"},{"boilertext":"A.D.
