Their widespread creation attests to a shared impulse to incorporate animals and nature into the world of humans. These elaborate and intricate vessels were used for ceremonial banquets and religious rituals, or in funerary activities. At times, it was believed that the use of these vessels could almost animate the creatures represented, making them present and involved in the unfolding events. The incorporation of vessels rep- resenting animals at these moments both connected the human and animal worlds and asserted the differences between these disparate realms.","remarks":"MED_22-T2-2_CLA.pdf – Day One Cataloguing (group chat for 2003-255, y1931-17, y1988-7, y1989-27, y1990-76, y1041, y1953-76, y1949-14, y1949-49, 2019-230, 2004-456, 2006-9)\r\n"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Purchased from Robert Hecht, Jr. and Atlantis Antiquities, NYC, in 1988.","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":34030,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV001954","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":34031,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV001955","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":7903,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1988-7_TOP_SL","isprimary":0,"rank":3,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"},{"id":8151,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/y1988-7_SL","isprimary":0,"rank":4,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"Jasper Gaunt, \"A cup in Princeton,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 54, no. 1 (1995): p. 30-38.","citation":"Jasper Gaunt, \"A cup in Princeton,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 54, no. 1 (1995): p. 30-38., p. 30-31; figs. 1-3","date":1995,"id":3058,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774716"},{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 1988,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 48, no. 1 (1989): p. 35-59.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 1988,\" Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 48, no. 1 (1989): p. 35-59., p. 53, p. 55 (illus.)","date":1989,"id":3105,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774727"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Europe, Greece, Athens","code":"Place made","continent":"Europe","subcontinent":null,"country":"Greece","region":null,"state":null,"city":"Athens","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_40.416_17.255.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2076656,"term":"kylikes","aatid":300198842,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2158039,"term":"birds","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2049167,"term":"ceramics","aatid":300151343,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2159399,"term":"palmettes","aatid":300009995,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2120463,"term":"vines","aatid":300132406,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2159697,"term":"running ornament","aatid":300165347,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2036484,"term":"Classical","aatid":300020093,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2036550,"term":"Attic","aatid":300020118,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2036598,"term":"Black-figure","aatid":300020195,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2168009,"term":"wash","aatid":300011051,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2168031,"term":"glaze","aatid":300015091,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2160750,"term":"ceramic","aatid":300235507,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2076656,"classification":"kylikes"},{"id":2049167,"classification":"ceramics"}],"cultures":[{"id":13588,"culture":"Greek, Attic","alphasort":"Attic","begindate":0,"enddate":0,"displayculture":"Greek, Attic","displaydate":null}],"cultureterms":[{"id":2036550,"culture":"Attic"}],"periods":[{"id":14500,"period":"Classical Period","alphasort":"Classical Period","begindate":-480,"enddate":-323,"displayperiod":"Classical Period, ca. 480–323 BCE","displaydate":"ca. 480–323 BCE"}],"periodterms":[{"id":2036484,"period":"Classical"},{"id":2036598,"period":"Black-figure"}],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199316,"term":"Ancient Mediterranean Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"7.50"},{"element":"Overall","type":"diam.","units":"centimeters","dimension":"20.00"}],"packages":[{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":282738,"name":"Bingo_Animals"},{"packageid":220207,"name":"Gallery_22(Pavilion6)-AncientMed"},{"packageid":181991,"name":"web_2020_ancient_study_corridor"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV001954"],"displaymaker":null,"displayculture":"Greek, Attic","displayperiod":"Classical Period, ca. 480–323 BCE","caption":"Greek, Attic, Classical Period (ca. 480–323 BCE), Athens, Greece, ca. 475–450 BCE, Kylix (drinking cup) depicting palmettes (exterior) and a bird (tondo).
