The one on the\nleft is almost twice the height of the other. Light pours out from beyond the\narch. I look for its source. A dull gloom fills the rest of the space above the\nbridge. Dark shadows on horseback ride single file across the span from one\nrocky ledge to the other. A partition of tall gray pillars divides the shadows\nfrom what lies beyond the overpass, and fog wafts between the columns,\nobstructing my view. I imagine that the pillars speak to one another,\nexchanging gasps and groans. I peer into the crevasse shaped by the flanking\nrocky ledges in front of the pillars and the bridge. </span></font></p><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">\n\n</font><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><span style='font-family: \"Calibri\",sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;'>From\nthe flat ledge on the left, leaning over its ragged rim, three figures move\ntoward the crevasse. I cannot tell if these figures are human, or whether they\nare male or female. The one standing farthest away seems to be clad in a long\ncloak, but this may be a body, not a garment. This figure hunches over, looking\ndown into the chasm, perhaps at the silhouettes under the arch. I notice the\nprofile of the second and largest figure on this side: a sharp nose and two\nslits, one for an eye and the other for a mouth. With a back that blends into\nthe surrounding cave, this figure resembles a stone. It subsumes the body\nclosest to me. This figure, in all black, wears a textured cloak, perhaps, of\nfur, and has a beard. A long, dark rod in its outstretched arm points down to\nthe silhouettes beneath the bridge. A mysterious oval cuts the cloak, perhaps\naround the figure's eye, where light or skin shines through. </span></font></p><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><span style='font-family: \"Calibri\",sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;'></span></font><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><span style='font-family: \"Calibri\",sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;'>Opposite\nthese ambiguous profiles, three more animal-like coyote figures perch on the\nother side of the crevasse. There are three tiers to their ledge. Each creature\nstands upon one. The top figure is gray and hazy, head leaning down over the\nside and, like the figures on the other ledge, it peers at the arch below. The\nother two creatures are more alert, with ears upright and eyes open wide. The\nblue-spotted coyote on the lowest tier stares across at the opposite figures.\nIts bulging eyes and protective stance leave me wondering what it may be\nguarding.</span></font></p><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><span style='font-family: \"Calibri\",sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;'><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">\n\n<i style=\"mso-bidi-font-style: normal;\"><span style='font-family: \"Calibri\",sans-serif; font-size: 10pt;'>Abigail Glickman&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;\nPrinceton Class of 2023</span></i></font></p><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">\n\n<br></font></p></span><p><br></p></font></p><p><br></p><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\"><br></font></p><p><br></p><p></p><p></p><p><font face=\"Times New Roman\" size=\"3\">\n\n<br></font></p>","remarks":"CWR 209 / ART 223 / COM 240 / GSS 277 Along the Edge: Leonora Carrington"}],"datebegin":1992,"sortnumber":"1999   48","published_date":"2026-03-31 02:24:57.482035","objectid":34977,"dimensions":"sight: 56 x 75 cm (22 1/16 x 29 1/2 in.)\r\nframe: 74 × 92.8 × 4 cm (29 1/8 × 36 9/16 × 1 9/16 in.)","on_view":false}
