Gowin found the aerial perspective appealing because it gave the viewer a new vantage point on landscapes that were often overlooked. This photograph depicts a series of agricultural fi elds in Washington State. See from above, the fi elds lose their specifi city but gain an abstract geometry. On the transformation of nature by human beings, Gowin once said: “among the powerful forces shaping modern life, agriculture on the industrial scale was contributing much to our age and was itself an element of the cold war in its overuse of the resources on which life depends.”","remarks":null}],"datebegin":1991,"sortnumber":"1998  169","published_date":"2026-03-31 02:25:05.525326","objectid":35177,"dimensions":"image: 24.1 x 24.2 cm (9 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.)\r\nsheet: 27.7 x 35.5 cm (10 7/8 x 14 in.)","on_view":false}
