The bulging eyes, puffed cheeks, and open mouth on these head-shaped pipes are sculptural conventions; they also recall expressions made by smokers while inhaling or exhaling. The figures’ knobbed caps, a type originally worn by Bamum kings and titleholders, convey prestige.
