Famous for his contemporary social satires, Hogarth ironically depicts himself here in the guise of a history painter at his easel, studiously limning out a classical composition of the comic muse Thalia holding her mask, with a copy of his own engraving <EM>The Analysis of Beauty</EM> folded into a portfolio at the artist's feet.
