Chinese pictorial themes that involve listening in a landscape often reflect quiet solitude and communion with nature. When this scroll was painted in 1839, Dai Xi was serving as an official in Guangdong province, southeastern China. A year earlier, he had received a commendation from the emperor encouraging him develop his painting skills by studying the landscapes he encountered during his travels in that region.
