Since Hosoe visited both areas during his youth, Simon may represent a theatrical self-portrait. Although Japan has a centuries-old tradition of men dressing as women in the theater, in the 1970s, Japanese men who cross-dressed outside the realm of entertainment would generally have been shunned. Thus, Simon’s departure from the theater into an outdoor or urban landscape asks us to consider the relationship between identity and setting.
","remarks":"Franz photo rotation"}],"media":[{"id":85306,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV11860","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted","caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 2000,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 60 (2001): p. 66-93.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 2000,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 60 (2001): p. 66-93., p. 80","date":2001,"id":941,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774812"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place depicted: Asia, Japan, Tokyo","code":"Place depicted","continent":"Asia","subcontinent":null,"country":"Japan","region":null,"state":"Tokyo","city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/1850147/tokyo.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2099934,"term":"homosexuality","aatid":300055188,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053728,"term":"black-and-white photographs","aatid":300128347,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2159635,"term":"fields","aatid":300193636,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053200,"term":"photographs","aatid":300046300,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2127760,"term":"kimonos","aatid":300046171,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2033838,"term":"Japanese","aatid":300018519,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2055723,"term":"portraits","aatid":300015637,"termtype":"Subject"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053728,"classification":"black-and-white photographs"},{"id":2053200,"classification":"photographs"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2033838,"culture":"Japanese"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199319,"term":"Asian Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199326,"term":"Photography","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"sheet","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"35.60"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"27.80"},{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"29.50"},{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"22.70"}],"packages":[{"packageid":38973,"name":"Web_PhotoRotation_2015"},{"packageid":183111,"name":"Photo_remainder"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV11860"],"displaymaker":"Eikoh Hosoe 細江英公, Japanese, born 1933","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Eikoh Hosoe 細江英公 (Japanese, born 1933), Simon: A Private Landscape, Near the Arakawa, 1971.
