He is a member of the Generación de la Ruptura, or Breakaway Generation, a group of Mexican artists who, following World War II, rejected the nationalist focus of the large-scale mural painters who preceded them in favor of work that combines visual references to the history of art with a focus on everyday life in Mexico. In this melancholic portrait, Coronel employs expressive brushstrokes and somber tones of brown and red that recall the Spanish Baroque paintings of Diego Velázquez (1599–1660) to depict the profile of a man gazing out from the canvas.","remarks":"Lowrie House Install 2022 "}],"media":[{"id":123695,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV46657","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"restricted","caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2001,\" <EM>Record of the Princeton University Art Museum</EM> 61 (2002): p. 101-142.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2001,\" <EM>Record of the Princeton University Art Museum</EM> 61 (2002): p. 101-142., p. 102","date":2002,"id":3028,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774768"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: North America, Mexico","code":"Place made","continent":"North America","subcontinent":null,"country":"Mexico","region":null,"state":null,"city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"https://www.geonames.org/3996063/mexico.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2038506,"term":"Mexican","aatid":300107963,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2052977,"term":"paintings","aatid":300033618,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2051582,"term":"profiles (figures)","aatid":300123319,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2088270,"term":"men","aatid":300025928,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053145,"term":"oil paintings","aatid":300033799,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2167780,"term":"oil paint","aatid":300015050,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2171344,"term":"canvas","aatid":null,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053145,"classification":"oil paintings"},{"id":2052977,"classification":"paintings"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2038506,"culture":"Mexican"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199323,"term":"Latin American Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"72.60"},{"element":"frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"82.30"},{"element":"frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"3.20"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"79.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"69.00"}],"packages":[{"packageid":175567,"name":"Web_All-Latin-American-Art_11_2018"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV46657"],"displaymaker":"Rafael Coronel, Mexican, 1932–2019","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Rafael Coronel (Mexican, 1932–2019), Profile, 1980s.
