Here, Wojnarowicz’s melancholic gaze and the dramatic shadows crossing his body create a portentous portrait of loss and grief.

Student response:

I am privileged to have never experienced the death of a loved one, but as a descendant of Holocaust survivors, I was raised to be aware of death. Whether one has been near death or not, I imagine that many people—too many—across the world can identify with Wojnarowicz. Dejection. Fatigue. Hopelessness. Parents, children, friends, and neighbors lost to COVID-19. With all the loss that is dominating my conversations and newsfeeds, I often forget that AIDS still mercilessly ravages communities. However, when I look at this photograph, I am reminded that AIDS has not ceased to exist. To me, this photograph humanizes people affected by AIDS and demonstrates their pain. When I engage the artwork, I feel their inescapable pain. On World AIDS Day, may this work remind us that, whether by COVID-19, AIDS, or other forms of illness or suffering, we will all experience death and loss. When the day comes that I will have to face the death of a loved one, I don’t know if I’ll be prepared or petrified, but I know I will survive, just like the generations of my family before me.

Benjy Jude ’23
","remarks":"SAB students respond to World Aid's Day"}],"media":[{"id":91913,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV17775","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"Restricted","caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2001,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 61 (2002): p. 101-142.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2001,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 61 (2002): p. 101-142., p. 124","date":2002,"id":3028,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774768"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: North America, United States, New York","code":"Place made","continent":"North America","subcontinent":null,"country":"United States","region":null,"state":"New York","city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/6252001/united-states.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2055657,"term":"figures (representations)","aatid":300189808,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2188467,"term":"Depicts","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2089806,"term":"artists","aatid":300025103,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053728,"term":"black-and-white photographs","aatid":300128347,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2053200,"term":"photographs","aatid":300046300,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2038492,"term":"American","aatid":300107956,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2088270,"term":"men","aatid":300025928,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2154022,"term":"gelatin silver process","aatid":300139114,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2055723,"term":"portraits","aatid":300015637,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2154022,"term":"gelatin silver process","aatid":300139114,"termtype":"Techniques"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053728,"classification":"black-and-white photographs"},{"id":2154022,"classification":"gelatin silver process"},{"id":2053200,"classification":"photographs"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2038492,"culture":"American"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199325,"term":"North American Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199326,"term":"Photography","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"sheet","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"40.50"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"50.50"},{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"37.70"},{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"37.30"}],"packages":[{"packageid":183111,"name":"Photo_remainder"},{"packageid":185691,"name":"web_norightsclearance2000-present"},{"packageid":192904,"name":"web_2020_WorldAIDSDay"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV17775"],"displaymaker":"Peter Hujar, 1934–1987; born Trenton, NJ; died New York, NY | Person depicted: David Wojnarowicz, American, 1954–1992","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Peter Hujar (1934–1987; born Trenton, NJ; died New York, NY), Person depicted: David Wojnarowicz (American, 1954–1992), David Wojnarowicz, 1981, printed ca. 1981–87.
