Presented in three distinct scenes, the narrative follows the god from his departure from the underworld at the behest of a revered sky deity, through his conception and mother’s care, to his safe arrival at the earth’s surface. The scene featured here shows the final moment of the narrative, with the infant maize god riding on a large backpack carried by a turtle, identifiable by the shape of its mouth and the personified mountain face on its back, signifying the rocky hardness of its shell. The hieroglyphic caption reads pih yikatz (its burden is immense), referring both to the turtle’s massive pack and to the import of his load: the staple crop on its journey from the underworld to the terrestrial realm, where it will reemerge with the new growing season.\n","remarks":"as per curator, Day 1 cataloging"}],"media":[{"id":13495,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_1","isprimary":0,"rank":6,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":13496,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_2","isprimary":0,"rank":7,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":13497,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_3","isprimary":0,"rank":8,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":13498,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_4","isprimary":0,"rank":9,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":15794,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/research.mayavase.com/kerrmaya_list.php?_allSearch","isprimary":0,"rank":10,"mediatypeid":7,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Maya Vase Database"},{"id":20251,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_A","isprimary":1,"rank":3,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":20252,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_B","isprimary":0,"rank":4,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":20253,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2005-127_C","isprimary":0,"rank":5,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"Gerald Berjonneau, Emile Deletaille, and Jean-Louis Sonnery, Rediscovered Masterpieces of Mesoamerica: Mexico-Guatemala-Honduras (Boulogne: Editions Arts, 1985).","citation":"Gerald Berjonneau, Emile Deletaille, and Jean-Louis Sonnery, Rediscovered Masterpieces of Mesoamerica: Mexico-Guatemala-Honduras (Boulogne: Editions Arts, 1985)., cat. no. 380 (illus.)","date":1985,"id":2538,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/13186418"},{"boilertext":"Persis B.
