The negative could then be projected onto a light-sensitive surface to create a positive print. The idea that an image could be used to print multiple copies of its inverse became the foundation of photography. As was common practice, a thin layer of beeswax was applied to the paper negative of this portrait to help it survive numerous uses and to minimize the reproduction of the negative paper’s grainy texture in the photographic prints.\n","remarks":"PHO_18_WLA.pdf - Day 1 Installation - Group chat for 2005-41 a and 2005-41 b"}],"media":[{"id":85758,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV12204","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2005,\" <em>Record of the Princeton University Art Museum</em> 65 (2006): p. 49-81.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2005,\" <em>Record of the Princeton University Art Museum</em> 65 (2006): p. 49-81., p. 67","date":2006,"id":429,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/20442620"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Europe, France, Falaise","code":"Place made","continent":"Europe","subcontinent":null,"country":"France","region":null,"state":null,"city":"Falaise","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/6453668/falaise.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2031609,"term":"French","aatid":300111188,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2053728,"term":"black-and-white photographs","aatid":300128347,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2053200,"term":"photographs","aatid":300046300,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2125777,"term":"books","aatid":300028051,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053600,"term":"salted paper prints","aatid":300127149,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2055657,"term":"figures (representations)","aatid":300189808,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2088280,"term":"women","aatid":300025943,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2055723,"term":"portraits","aatid":300015637,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2064951,"term":"chairs","aatid":300037772,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2154159,"term":"salted paper processes","aatid":300053495,"termtype":"Techniques"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053600,"classification":"salted paper prints"},{"id":2053728,"classification":"black-and-white photographs"},{"id":2053200,"classification":"photographs"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2031609,"culture":"French"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199321,"term":"European Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199326,"term":"Photography","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"25.20"},{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"32.00"},{"element":"Proposed frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"55.24"},{"element":"Proposed frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"45.08"},{"element":"Proposed frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"3.17"},{"element":"mat","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"50.79"},{"element":"mat","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"40.63"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"26.60"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"33.00"}],"packages":[{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":234201,"name":"PUAM_Light and Color"},{"packageid":183099,"name":"Photography-19thcentury_01"},{"packageid":213011,"name":"Gallery_18-Photography"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV12204"],"displaymaker":"Ferdinand Tillard, 1819–1884; born and died Bayeux, France; active Falaise, France","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Ferdinand Tillard (1819–1884; born and died Bayeux, France; active Falaise, France), Syrna Duhamel (?), ca. 1855.
