Following Manet’s one-man exhibition in 1867, the dissatisfied artist cut the canvas and preserved just three pieces. Princeton’s painting<i> Woman with a  Cigarette </i>was once thought to be a fourth fragment, but x-ray examination has proved that it was always an independent work of art.
