Appointed court architect and director of building by King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1816, Klenze established Munich as a city of architectural splendor. In 1834, following the revolution that won Greece independence from centuries of Ottoman rule, Klenze was sent to Athens to inspect plans for a Hellenistic-inspired palace for the newly installed King Otto I. This meticulous watercolor of the Parthenon presumably dates from that period, when Klenze also supervised the preservation of classical monuments and the removal of Turkish fortifications and mosques that had been added to the Acropolis.","remarks":null},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"Wife of von Klenze;
Mrs. Arkwright Doppler.
purchase of the Princeton University Art Museum","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":9610,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/x1946-100_GS","isprimary":0,"rank":10,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"},{"id":79044,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV09855","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"Richard Stillwell, \"The Parthenon in 1834\", Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 19, no. 1 (1960): p. 93-97.","citation":"Richard Stillwell, \"The Parthenon in 1834\", Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 19, no. 1 (1960): p. 93-97., fig. 1, p. 94 (illus.)","date":1960,"id":5384,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774369"},{"boilertext":"Maija Gervic, Leo fon Klence i Novyj Ėrmitaž (Leo von Klenze and the New Hermitage): v kontekste evropejskogo muzejnogo stroitel'stva = Leo von Klenze, 1784-1864, (Sankt-Peterburg: ARS, 2003).","citation":"Maija Gervic, Leo fon Klence i Novyj Ėrmitaž (Leo von Klenze and the New Hermitage): v kontekste evropejskogo muzejnogo stroitel'stva = Leo von Klenze, 1784-1864, (Sankt-Peterburg: ARS, 2003)., p. 36, fig. 17","date":2003,"id":5385,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/874375300"},{"boilertext":"\"Recent accessions\", Record of the Museum of Historic Art, Princeton University 6, no. 1/2 (1947): p. 7.","citation":"\"Recent accessions\", Record of the Museum of Historic Art, Princeton University 6, no. 1/2 (1947): p. 7., p. 7","date":1947,"id":3294,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774166"}],"exhibitions":[{"exhibitionid":1033,"citation":"European Drawings from Neo-Classicism to Impressionism (Tuesday, December 04, 1990 - Sunday, January 06, 1991)","isvirtual":true,"begindate":"1990-12-04","enddate":"1991-01-06","uri":"https://artmuseum.princeton.edu/art/exhibitions/1033"}],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place depicted: Greece, Athens, Parthenon","code":"Place depicted","continent":null,"subcontinent":null,"country":"Greece","region":null,"state":null,"city":"Athens","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":"Parthenon","locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/maps/google_37.972_23.727.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2053164,"term":"watercolors","aatid":300078925,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2031614,"term":"German","aatid":300111192,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2084828,"term":"temples","aatid":300007595,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2087836,"term":"ruins","aatid":300008057,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2051964,"term":"drawings","aatid":300033973,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2107406,"term":"architectural elements","aatid":300000885,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2167929,"term":"watercolor","aatid":300015045,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2162862,"term":"graphite","aatid":300011098,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2044331,"term":"laid paper","aatid":300014184,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2051964,"classification":"drawings"},{"id":2053164,"classification":"watercolors"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2031614,"culture":"German"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"45.30"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"61.40"}],"packages":[{"packageid":210001,"name":"2022_ART442_04_21"},{"packageid":210384,"name":"TDC-Final [4]"},{"packageid":218101,"name":"web_TDC-Final [5]"},{"packageid":182970,"name":"P&D_Drawings_Watercolors"},{"packageid":210094,"name":"2022_ART102/ARC102_02_23-25"},{"packageid":234043,"name":"TDC-Final [6]"},{"packageid":207234,"name":"SAB_Gala2021"},{"packageid":223835,"name":"TDC-Final [5]"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV09855"],"displaymaker":"Leo von Klenze, German, 1784–1864","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Leo von Klenze (German, 1784–1864), West end of Parthenon, ca. 1834.
