During the voyage the astronauts Bruce McCandless and Robert L. Stewart carried out the first untethered space walks, venturing further from their ship than ever before with the help of a jet-propelled backpack, the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU). After a series of tests, McCandless went “free-flying” 320 feet away from the ship’s cabin, using joysticks to fire nitrogen jet thrusters and propel himself in any direction he chose. This view captures an important moment in scientific history while also evoking the dizzying possibilities of space exploration.\n","remarks":"PHO_18_WLA.pdf - Day 1 Installation"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Provenance","textentryhtml":"
\n[Alan Klotz Gallery, New York, NY]; purchased by the Princeton University Art Museum, 2006.\n
\n
\n\t

","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":18850,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2006-448","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"PUAM Photo"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2006,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 66 (2007): p. 41-74.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2006,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 66 (2007): p. 41-74., p. 63","date":2007,"id":3000,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/20442628"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[],"terms":[{"id":2053200,"term":"photographs","aatid":300046300,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2188687,"term":"astronauts","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2038492,"term":"American","aatid":300107956,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2053737,"term":"color photographs","aatid":300128359,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2130151,"term":"space suits","aatid":300209968,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2054188,"term":"dye transfer prints","aatid":300162562,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2154789,"term":"dye transfer process","aatid":300053471,"termtype":"Techniques"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053200,"classification":"photographs"},{"id":2054188,"classification":"dye transfer prints"},{"id":2053737,"classification":"color photographs"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2038492,"culture":"American"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199325,"term":"North American Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199326,"term":"Photography","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"sheet","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"57.50"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"56.70"},{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"50.50"},{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"49.80"},{"element":"Proposed frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"61.59"},{"element":"Proposed frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"71.75"},{"element":"Proposed frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"3.17"},{"element":"mat","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"60.95"},{"element":"mat","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"71.11"}],"packages":[{"packageid":206416,"name":"image_descriptions_KG"},{"packageid":207234,"name":"SAB_Gala2021"},{"packageid":213011,"name":"Gallery_18-Photography"},{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":183111,"name":"Photo_remainder"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2006-448"],"displaymaker":"National Aeronautics and Space Administration, active United States","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"National Aeronautics and Space Administration (active United States), Astronaut Bruce McCandless with Earth in Background, 1984.
