In this example, he foregrounds railroad tracks. This pictorial device interrupt our view into the composition, enhancing a sense of physical and psychological isolation. As in many of Hopper’s urban landscapes, the absence of figures underscores the feeling of mystery and silence communicated by the spare, abstracted forms.
