Exceedingly elegant, and executed with an economy of brushwork, the painting features an abstracted female figure sitting on what appears to be a decorative rug. The rug tilts upward instead of receding backward, thereby meeting the picture plane and contradicting the conventions of one-point perspective. The woman’s eyes are locked with those of the man to her left, represented only by a disembodied head. The scene reads like a fantasy—a projection of the man’s mind. Its bright palette, especially the predominance of yellow, reflects the Mediterranean setting that Picasso made his primary residence during and after World War II.
","remarks":"K4-6 gallery rotation March 2014, also used for K4-6 gallery rotation February 2015"}],"media":[{"id":18203,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2007-116","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":"restricted","caption":"Bruce White Photography"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2007,\" in \"More than one: photographs in sequence,\" special issue, Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 67 (2008): p. 96-119.
","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2007,\" in \"More than one: photographs in sequence,\" special issue, Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 67 (2008): p. 96-119.
, pp. 96–97 (illus.)","date":2008,"id":977,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/20442639"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[],"terms":[{"id":2088280,"term":"women","aatid":300025943,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2052977,"term":"paintings","aatid":300033618,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2055672,"term":"nudes","aatid":300189568,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2088270,"term":"men","aatid":300025928,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053145,"term":"oil paintings","aatid":300033799,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2031673,"term":"Spanish","aatid":300111215,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2167780,"term":"oil paint","aatid":300015050,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2171344,"term":"canvas","aatid":null,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053145,"classification":"oil paintings"},{"id":2052977,"classification":"paintings"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2031673,"culture":"Spanish"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199321,"term":"European Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"65.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"81.00"},{"element":"frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"96.90"},{"element":"frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"112.71"},{"element":"frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"5.39"}],"packages":[{"packageid":182999,"name":"image_descriptions_eps_painitings"},{"packageid":210962,"name":"Z_JS European On View 10 years"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2007-116"],"displaymaker":"Pablo Picasso, 1881–1973; born Malaga, Spain; died Mougins, France; active Paris","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Pablo Picasso (1881–1973; born Malaga, Spain; died Mougins, France; active Paris), Tête d’homme et nu assis (Head of a Man and Seated Nude), 1964.
