In 1838, he embarked on an extensive tour of Egypt and the Holy Land, becoming one of the first British artists to record the Near East firsthand. Upon his return to London in 1839, with the encouragement of such notable sponsors as Queen Victoria, Roberts engaged the Belgian lithographer Louis Haghe to reproduce his meticulous drawings and watercolors in a series of six folio-sized color plate books. The enterprise was an immediate international sensation, with two thousand copies sold before publication.
