Most notable were those published by Charles Philipon, La Caricature and Le Charivari, which combined journalism with the art of caricature. In 1834, Philipon established
L’Association mensuelle, an organization that published a series of satirical lithographs distributed monthly to regular subscribers, the proceeds of which went to pay legal fines imposed on the publisher. Daumier regularly contributed
to Philipon’s enterprises and produced both of these lithographs for L’Association mensuelle. In Enfoncé Lafayette! Attrape, Mon Vieux!, Louis-Philippe
appears as a mourning undertaker at the funeral of the Marquis de Lafayette, the popular hero of the American Revolution who had played an important role in Louis-Philippe’s rise to the throne—a role Lafayette came to regret before his
death in 1834. Rue Transnonain, le 15 avril 1834, perhaps Daumier’s most haunting lithograph, memorializes the tragic massacre of nineteen people, shot in their homes by soldiers attempting to quell riots in a working-class section of Paris.","remarks":"K5-6Feb2012.pdf"}],"media":[{"id":81866,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV10064","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"Loys Delteil and Nicolas-Auguste Hazard, Catalogue Raisonne de L’Oeuvre Lithographie de Honore Daumier (France: Hachette Livre-BNF, 2013).","citation":"Loys Delteil and Nicolas-Auguste Hazard, Catalogue Raisonne de L’Oeuvre Lithographie de Honore Daumier (France: Hachette Livre-BNF, 2013)., no. 309","date":1904,"id":6111,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/231784692"},{"boilertext":"\r\n
Loys Delteil, \"Volume 20,\" Le peintre-graveur illustré (Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1906-1930).<?xml:namespace prefix = \"o\" ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office\" />
","citation":"\r\n
Loys Delteil, \"Volume 20,\" Le peintre-graveur illustré (Paris: Chez l'Auteur, 1906-1930).<?xml:namespace prefix = \"o\" ns = \"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office\" />
, no. 134, pp. 20–22 (illus.)","date":1906,"id":6119,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/11858030"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Europe, France, Paris","code":"Place made","continent":"Europe","subcontinent":null,"country":"France","region":null,"state":null,"city":"Paris","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/2968815/paris.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2122416,"term":"satires","aatid":300251297,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2088270,"term":"men","aatid":300025928,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2031609,"term":"French","aatid":300111188,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2134769,"term":"funerals","aatid":300069162,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2054256,"term":"prints","aatid":300041273,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2135437,"term":"deaths","aatid":300151836,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2055657,"term":"figures (representations)","aatid":300189808,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2054597,"term":"lithographs","aatid":300041379,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2155010,"term":"lithography","aatid":300053271,"termtype":"Techniques"},{"id":2167709,"term":"lithographic ink","aatid":300187750,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2054256,"classification":"prints"},{"id":2054597,"classification":"lithographs"}],"cultures":[],"cultureterms":[{"id":2031609,"culture":"French"}],"periods":[],"periodterms":[],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"29.00"},{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"41.70"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"54.00"},{"element":"sheet","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"35.50"}],"packages":[{"packageid":182971,"name":"P&D_French_Prints"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV10064"],"displaymaker":"Honoré Daumier, 1808–1879; born Valmondois, France; died Marseille, France | Printed by Nicolas Louis Delaunois, French, active early to mid-19th century | Published by Aubert, French, active 1829–1847","displayculture":null,"displayperiod":null,"caption":"Honoré Daumier (1808–1879; born Valmondois, France; died Marseille, France), Printed by Nicolas Louis Delaunois (French, active early to mid-19th century), Published by Aubert (French, active 1829–1847), Enfoncé Lafayette!
