From about 500 to 1000 CE, Tiwanaku was the hub of trade networks. With its eponymous center on Lake Titicaca, it encompassed and expanded beyond what is today Bolivia. The Wari empire, situated to the north, simultaneously imposed its own systems of control and aesthetics on communities throughout much of what is today Peru. Their art shares many stylistic features, although some Wari art employs complex forms of abstraction not seen in Tiwanaku visual culture. On the tunic\n\nworn by the Wari male figure above, for example, the interlocking opposed skeletal heads become colorful stripes. The Tiwanaku wood kero (ceremonial drinking cup) presents a frontal face with emanating, serpentine rays, a signature motif of Tiwanaku art that also adorns the silver plumes in the case opposite.\n","remarks":"AAA2_20-T6-1_CLA_FA.pdf - Day 1 installation"}],"media":[{"id":22960,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2009-82","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"},{"id":22961,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2009-82_TOP","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Bruce White Photography"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2009,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 69 (2010): p. 51-85.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2009,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 69 (2010): p. 51-85., p. 62","date":2010,"id":1248,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/41757697"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: South America, Peru, Central coast","code":"Place made","continent":"South America","subcontinent":"Andes","country":"Peru","region":"Central coast","state":null,"city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/3932488/republic-of-peru.html","location":{"lat":"-10","lon":"-75.25"}}],"terms":[{"id":2048754,"term":"ceremonial objects","aatid":300234117,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2049167,"term":"ceramics","aatid":300151343,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2158039,"term":"birds","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2055947,"term":"polychrome","aatid":300252261,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2055947,"term":"polychrome","aatid":300252261,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2057221,"term":"brown","aatid":300127490,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2103920,"term":"cats","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2135524,"term":"rituals (events)","aatid":300065284,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2147420,"term":"mythical or legendary beings","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2036029,"term":"Huari","aatid":300017283,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2036036,"term":"Middle horizon","aatid":300017300,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2073507,"term":"stirrup jars","aatid":300198864,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2055657,"term":"figures (representations)","aatid":300189808,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2168423,"term":"pigment","aatid":300013109,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2160397,"term":"slip","aatid":300010459,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2160750,"term":"ceramic","aatid":300235507,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2055947,"term":"polychrome","aatid":300252261,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2073507,"classification":"stirrup jars"},{"id":2049167,"classification":"ceramics"},{"id":2048754,"classification":"ceremonial objects"},{"id":2055947,"classification":"polychrome"}],"cultures":[{"id":13511,"culture":"Wari","alphasort":"Wari","begindate":0,"enddate":0,"displayculture":"Wari (Pachacamac style)","displaydate":null}],"cultureterms":[{"id":2036029,"culture":"Huari"}],"periods":[{"id":13507,"period":"Middle Horizon","alphasort":"Horizon, Middle","begindate":550,"enddate":1000,"displayperiod":"Middle Horizon (Epoch 2)","displaydate":null}],"periodterms":[{"id":2036036,"period":"Middle horizon"}],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199317,"term":"Art of the Ancient Americas","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"17.10"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"21.80"}],"packages":[{"packageid":225488,"name":"Gallery_20(Pavilion5)-AAA"},{"packageid":278831,"name":"10282025-DAY1-ONVIEW"},{"packageid":129407,"name":"CRS_ART103_2018_week6"}],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/2009-82"],"displaymaker":null,"displayculture":"Wari (Pachacamac style)","displayperiod":"Middle Horizon (Epoch 2)","caption":"Wari (Pachacamac style), Middle Horizon (Epoch 2), 800–900, Central coast, Peru, Andes, Bridge-spout vessel with two winged figures.
