Erected in the twelfth lunar month of 1156, these tablets were carved with portraits of Confucius and his seventy-two disciples. Each portrait was accompanied by a eulogy written by Emperor Gaozong (1107-1187; r. 1127-1162). The portraits are sometimes attributed to the Song dynasty painter Li Gonglin 李公麟 (ca. 1049-1106), but this attribution only seems to start in the Ming dynasty.
