Lotus flowers adorn her hair, which at top center has the seated figure of Amitabha. According to the titlepiece written in large seal-script calligraphy by Zuo Zhongyao, the portrait follows a model by the Tang dynasty painter Wu Daozi 吳道子 (685-758). The image was copied and carved into stone by Ye Chengtiao in 1664 from a sketch copy stored by Zuo’s father, Zuo Peiyao 左佩瑤 (17th century), and two men, Huang Jiading 黃家鼎 (17th century) and Liang Yudian 梁禹甸 (17th century), seem to have been the agents responsible for erecting the pictorial stone from which this rubbing was taken. The role of Zhang Shixi 張世錫 (17th century), named in the inscription is unclear. In this rubbing, the area within the outlines of the standing figure are lightly inked. The pictorial stone survives in the collection of the Xi’an Forest of Steles (Xi’an beilin 西安碑林).","remarks":null}],"media":[{"id":59821,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV05341","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":59822,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV05342","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":59881,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV05232","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":""Recent Acquisitions," Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 18, no. 1 (1959): p. 40-42.","citation":""Recent Acquisitions," Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 18, no. 1 (1959): p. 40-42., p. 42","date":1959,"id":876,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774388"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: Asia, China","code":"Place made","continent":"Asia","subcontinent":null,"country":"China","region":null,"state":null,"city":null,"county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":null,"locus":null,"river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":null,"location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2054786,"term":"rubbings","aatid":300103035,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2033355,"term":"Chinese","aatid":300018322,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2033562,"term":"Ming","aatid":300018438,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2055657,"term":"figures (representations)","aatid":300189808,"termtype":"Subject"}],"classifications":[{"id":2054786,"classification":"rubbings"}],"cultures":[{"id":13592,"culture":"Chinese","alphasort":"Chinese","begindate":0,"enddate":0,"displayculture":"Chinese","displaydate":null}],"cultureterms":[{"id":2033355,"culture":"Chinese"}],"periods":[{"id":12562,"period":"Ming dynasty","alphasort":"Ming dynasty","begindate":1368,"enddate":1644,"displayperiod":"Ming dynasty, 1368–1644","displaydate":"1368–1644"}],"periodterms":[{"id":2033562,"period":"Ming"}],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199319,"term":"Asian Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"244.50"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"83.00"},{"element":"image","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"220.60"},{"element":"image","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"78.00"}],"packages":[],"primaryimage":["https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV05341"],"displaymaker":"Ye Chengtiao 葉承祧, copyist, carver, active 1660s | Zuo Zhongyao 左重耀, calligrapher, active 17th century","displayculture":"Chinese","displayperiod":"Ming dynasty, 1368–1644","caption":"Chinese, Ming dynasty (1368–1644), Ye Chengtiao 葉承祧, copyist, carver (active 1660s), Zuo Zhongyao 左重耀, calligrapher (active 17th century), Portrait of Guanyin Bodhisattva by Wu Daozi of the Tang Dynasty, 1664 (stone); late 19th to first half of 20th century (rubbing).
