The haystacks characterize this as an agricultural region, but Münter’s landscapes in this period are curiously deserted, although always with signs of human habitation. It has been suggested that the lack of people in her compositions reflects the isolated life that Münter, Kandinsky, and their artist friends led in Murnau.
