Rosa’s The Death of Regulus (Virginia Museum of Fine Arts) for which this drawing is a preliminary sketch, serves as an example of such a classical subject with a Stoic sensibility. Atilius Regulus was a stalwart Roman consul and general whom the Carthaginians tortured to death in a nail studded barrel. Although the spatial specifics of the large scene have not yet been worked out, here Rosa anchored the central group of torturers with the juxtaposition of two ovals: the soldier’s shield and the barrel’s lid, where sharp nails are indicated with pale brown wash brushstrokes.
","remarks":"K1-3 April 2017 Rotation"}],"media":[{"id":44431,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/x1948-610_VER","isprimary":0,"rank":2,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"PUAM photo"},{"id":44432,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/x1948-610_REC","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"PUAM photo"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 1980\", Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 40, no. 1 (1981): p. 14-31.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Art Museum 1980\", Record of the Art Museum, Princeton University 40, no. 1 (1981): p. 14-31., p. 28 (illus.)","date":1981,"id":3490,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/3774603"},{"boilertext":"Laura Giles, Lia Markey, Claire Van Cleave, et. al., Italian Master Drawings from the Princeton University Art Museum, (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Art Museum, 2014).","citation":"Laura Giles, Lia Markey, Claire Van Cleave, et. al., Italian Master Drawings from the Princeton University Art Museum, (Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Art Museum, 2014)., p. 168, cat. no. 70; p. 169 (illus.); p. 170 (verso illus.)","date":2014,"id":1855,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/869726410"},{"boilertext":"Michael Mahoney, The drawings of Salvator Rosa, (New York; London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1977).","citation":"Michael Mahoney, The drawings of Salvator Rosa, (New York; London: Garland Publishing, Inc., 1977)., Vol. 1: p. 423-424;\r\nVol. 2: no. 42.1 (illus.)","date":1977,"id":523,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/2614008"},{"boilertext":"Luigi Salerno, Salvator Rosa, (Florence: G.
