Numbering in the hundreds, many of the caves were filled with paintings entirely covering the walls and ceilings. This modern artistic rendering faithfully copies the illustrated Buddhist scene in Cave 217, which dates to the eighth century and shows figures and buildings in a blue-green landscape. In 1943, photojournalist James C. Lo and his wife, Lucy, recorded the caves with meticulous photographs and notes. After moving to Taiwan in the 1950s, the Los invited a group of young artists to produce life-size copies of the cave murals.","remarks":"Blue-Green Realms in Chinese Painting rotation September 2019"}],"media":[],"hasimage":"false","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2012,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 71/72 (2012-13): p. 105-132.","citation":"\"Acquisitions of the Princeton University Art Museum 2012,\" Record of the Princeton University Art Museum 71/72 (2012-13): p. 105-132., p. 116","date":2012,"id":2988,"uri":"https://www.jstor.org/stable/24416388"}],"exhibitions":[],"geography":[{"displaygeography":"Place made: China, Gansu province, Dunhuang, Mogao Caves","code":"Place made","continent":null,"subcontinent":null,"country":"China","region":null,"state":"Gansu province","city":"Dunhuang","county":null,"subregion":null,"locale":"Mogao Caves","locus":"South wall, Cave 217","river":null,"excavation":null,"geoname":"http://www.geonames.org/1529271/qianfodong.html","location":{"lat":"","lon":""}}],"terms":[{"id":2033355,"term":"Chinese","aatid":300018322,"termtype":"Culture"},{"id":2033651,"term":"modern Chinese styles and periods","aatid":300106420,"termtype":"Period / Style"},{"id":2052977,"term":"paintings","aatid":300033618,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2055657,"term":"figures (representations)","aatid":300189808,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2094283,"term":"equestrians","aatid":300188602,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2055694,"term":"landscapes (representations)","aatid":300015636,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2103918,"term":"horses","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2048340,"term":"copies (derivitive objects)","aatid":300015640,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2103928,"term":"trees","aatid":null,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2078146,"term":"buildings","aatid":300004792,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2053099,"term":"cave paintings","aatid":300178308,"termtype":"Classification"},{"id":2120146,"term":"mountains","aatid":300008795,"termtype":"Subject"},{"id":2167672,"term":"ink","aatid":300015012,"termtype":"Materials"},{"id":2043813,"term":"paper (fiber product)","aatid":300014109,"termtype":"Materials"}],"classifications":[{"id":2053099,"classification":"cave paintings"},{"id":2052977,"classification":"paintings"},{"id":2048340,"classification":"copies (derivitive objects)"}],"cultures":[{"id":13592,"culture":"Chinese","alphasort":"Chinese","begindate":0,"enddate":0,"displayculture":"Chinese","displaydate":null}],"cultureterms":[{"id":2033355,"culture":"Chinese"}],"periods":[{"id":18282,"period":"High Tang dynasty","alphasort":"Tang dynasty, High","begindate":704,"enddate":781,"displayperiod":"copy after wall painting, High Tang dynasty, 704–781","displaydate":"704–781"},{"id":13587,"period":"Modern period","alphasort":"Modern","begindate":1912,"enddate":2100,"displayperiod":"Modern period, 1912–present","displaydate":"1912–present"}],"periodterms":[{"id":2033651,"period":"modern Chinese styles and periods"}],"attribute_groups":[{"id":2199319,"term":"Asian Art","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199324,"term":"Art Since 1945","termtype":"Collecting Area"},{"id":2199327,"term":"Prints and Drawings","termtype":"Collecting Area"}],"dimensionelements":[{"element":"frame","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"74.61"},{"element":"frame","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"133.03"},{"element":"frame","type":"Depth","units":"centimeters","dimension":"5.07"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Height","units":"centimeters","dimension":"69.00"},{"element":"Overall","type":"Width","units":"centimeters","dimension":"127.10"}],"packages":[{"packageid":57169,"name":"web_wopsr_2015-11_Dunhuang"},{"packageid":211435,"name":"PUAM_Kelly Wang Related Objs"},{"packageid":170144,"name":"web_2019_asian_september_bluegreen"}],"primaryimage":"","displaymaker":"James C.
