In this masterful engraving, Dürer rendered the sunlit contemporary setting—possibly inspired by the study or library of one of his humanist friends—with subtle linear perspective and highly textured detail. Dispersed throughout the cozy interior is material evidence of Jerome’s paramount spiritual concerns—human mortality and hope of salvation, as symbolized by the skull and the hourglass, and the small crucifix on his desk. There are also everyday objects—including a pair of scissors, scattered pillows, and comfortable slippers—all of which would have been as familiar to Dürer’s audience as would the image of a faithful dog, here shown dozing companionably beside the lion.
","remarks":"K2 Corridor: Revealing Interiors"},{"texttype":"Online","textpurpose":"Gallery Label","textentryhtml":"Together with Melancholia I and Knight, Death, and the Devil, this print completes Dürer’s master engravings or Meisterstiche series, produced around 1513–14. This contemplative image of Saint Jerome as a scholar gains its power from the artist’s technical skill—a variety of lines and marks are brilliantly manipulated to create layers of shadow, light, volume, and texture. The skull, hourglass, and cross symbolize human mortality and hope of salvation, Jerome’s primary concerns. Legend says that the saint once removed a thorn from the paw of a lion, which then became his permanent companion. The lion lying protectively in the foreground of the sunlit room represents the taming of human passions.","remarks":"K1-3 May 2012"}],"datebegin":1514,"sortnumber":"1949 208x","published_date":"2026-03-05 08:38:30.012831","objectid":8609,"dimensions":"plate (sheet trimmed to plate): 24.7 × 18.7 cm (9 3/4 × 7 3/8 in.)","on_view":false}
