He created several highly influential printed versions of the Passion narrative, in which he brought new life to traditional imagery of Jesus’s torture and execution through his expressive lines and gift for storytelling. This woodcut belongs to Dürer’s Large Passion series, which he completed in 1510 and published in book form the following year. In this contemplative scene, the horrific sight of Christ’s broken and lifeless body inspires dramatic gestures and sorrowful expressions in the figures and also in nature: the swooping birds and sinuous branches of the dead tree become evocative metaphors of the mourners’ grief.
","remarks":"K1-3RotationMar2015.pdf"}],"media":[{"id":101299,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/INV26230","isprimary":1,"rank":1,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Inventory Project"},{"id":2454,"uri":"https://media.artmuseum.princeton.edu/iiif/3/collection/x1957-144_GS","isprimary":0,"rank":10,"mediatypeid":1,"mediaviewtype":"(not assigned)","restrictions":null,"caption":"Luna Digitization Project"}],"hasimage":"true","bibliography":[{"boilertext":"
Campbell Dodgson, Albrecht Dürer (London: Medici Society, 1926).
","citation":"
Campbell Dodgson, Albrecht Dürer (London: Medici Society, 1926).
, no. 20, p. 274","date":1926,"id":6211,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/3338518"},{"boilertext":"
Rainer Schoch, Matthias Mende, and Anna Scherbaum, Albrecht Dürer: das druckgraphische Werk (München: Prestel, 2001).
","citation":"
Rainer Schoch, Matthias Mende, and Anna Scherbaum, Albrecht Dürer: das druckgraphische Werk (München: Prestel, 2001).
, no. 162","date":2001,"id":6213,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/46853856"},{"boilertext":"Erwin Panofsky, Albrecht Dürer (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1945).","citation":"Erwin Panofsky, Albrecht Dürer (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1945)., p. 305","date":1945,"id":6214,"uri":"https://search.worldcat.org/title/7184939"},{"boilertext":"Arthur Mayger Hind, Albrecht Dürer: his engravings and woodcuts (New York: Frederick A.
